We are currently in the midst of a severe early season drought. Heavy rains are in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Should we get an inch or more of rain, it will be very important to keep your soil moist to the depth of the grass rootzone to continue the plants healty. Turf, like all plants is a living breathing organism. It requires water, food and light to grow. Proper fertilization and water are necessary to maintain a healthy lawn. Watering should be done to apply at least 1″ of water per turf zone at a time watering deeper and less frequent as opposed to more frequent, but for less time. Watering should be done to simulate dew (between the hours of midnight and finished by 7:00 AM). Proper mowing height for most turf types (fescues, ryes and bluegrass) should be maintained at not less than 2 1/2″ and preferably 3″-3 1/2″. Mowing higher enables the grass to root deeper, shades out weeds and keeps the soil temperatures cooler. More information from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service is available online if you do a search thru the cooperative extension service.
